As an amateur radio operator, I use very high quality walkie-talkies every day. This radio is well built and appears to be quite rugged. I use GMRS radios because my wife is not a ham. We need to be able to communicate around our property (several acres) and into town. I estimate the power output of this radio to be 2-3 watts. This is on a par with my other walkie-talkies. Power output on portable radios is always a trade off between range and battery life. This radio has a small battery - so more power would kill the battery in a hurry. The power output is adequate. The so-called range boost makes only a small difference in output. The claimed 28 mile range is a joke. These ratings should be divided by a factor of 20 in the real world. So what! My $600 5 watt portables won't do much better. Don't be disappointed - be realistic. That's why hams and public safety agencies use mountain top repeaters. Professional GMRS units start around $200. At $35-$40 each these units are excellent.
The weather radio sensitivity is excellent even with the short antenna. Was able to pick up a NOAA transmitter over 125 miles away.
Other trade offs:
No external mike or headset jack due to waterproofing concerns. Cannot use AAA batteries which makes extended field use a challenge. Could use cigarette lighter adapter in a car, however. Suggest purchase extra battery packs from Uniden and charge in radio prior to expeditions.
UPDATE
I have to downgrade my opinion of the product after several months of use. The flexible antenna started to break near the base and has now broken completely. Since it is a fixed antenna it is not field replaceable. The radio is now junk.
This radio will not stand up to heavy use. Ironically the break in the antenna is at the place where the word "submersible" is imprinted into the rubber antenna. The letters make the antenna weaker at that point.
