WOW!!, i have to say this is one of the best sony products this year!. it's an upgrade from the powerful d-ne1. This is by far the smallest sony cd player!! even smaller than d-ej2000. but it is couple point ounces heavier, nothing too noticable. I love the design of this thing!! it has an attractive magnesium and aluminum body!!. i have the silver one, didn't even know they had black and gold ones. i woulda picked the black one but oh well. The software so far hjolds me about 350 songs. the quality is almost as good as a normal cd!. ok lets see te upgrades from d-ne1:
-smaller
-design
-new recharging cradle
-1 battery and 1 AA battery holds up to 85 hours!
-3 different lights for ff, rw, and play
-upgraded stock headphones (although not good as tho'se $50 headphones, it is still much better than the other stock headphones).
-it has full metal body
-THE BIGGEST ADDITION TO THE CD PLAYER!! it has an EQUALIZER!!.. if you want more bass than level 2 bass, just adjust the equalizer. if you want more treble, just adjust equalizer. it is simple. but i always keep mine on heavy, i can hear things crystal clear.
if you are looking for a cd player in a price range of $180-200, this is the best of the best. if you want somewhere $100-150 ones, check out the iriver ones. that is the one i had before this one. it was around $130 worked great but just didn't like some picky features. btw cd players are superb compared to md or mp3 players, first off a software like this can hold up to 490 songs on a disc, most people don't even need that many songs, but if you do, simple, burn another cd. now 2 cd= memory of a typical ipod. and to tell you, the equalizer and the bass on this thing is incredible. im more of abass p[erson, and the equalizer makes the bass just perfect for me. this is about as light as an mp3 player but not as small. if you get this cd player, you'll realize when you put it in your pocket, it feels like you just put a cd in your pocket. it's that light!!. with the metallic body, it is well buiilt. especially with the 1 year warranty. i recommend this to EVERYONE

Sony DSCP71 Cyber-shot 3MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom Review

Sony DSCP71 Cyber-shot 3MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Summary - the most camera I could find for [the price] in a small hanld held size. Lots of useful features. I am very satisfied with it as an artist tool. For landscapes less lens would be too far away, for blow up pics, less mega-pixels would be to grainy.
The Good.
Unlike film cameras, this camera produces all hues of the color wheel correctly. It also records a larger range of darks and lights. As an artist I have paid for professional studio shots of my watercolor paintings that are not as good as this camera. These qualities are mostly a function of digital vs. film camera. All camera films have color bias and less value range than what a painting can have. However, even among digital cameras there can be some color bias, this one has perfect balance. Also it can see into shadow areas revealing details better than most film cameras. With 3 meg Pixels it produces 4x6 inch pictures at 340 pdi on a printer, very sharp. Posters and magazine are printed at 150 dpi for this camera that would be about a 8x10 print, they still look better.
It has an amazing macro lens with a tulip icon. I took very close and very sharp pictures of tulips with it. Other subjests may work well, I don't know yet. It is packed with lots options like White Balance for cloudy days, very helpfull in Seatle. Other good features are manual focus, noise reduction, and in low contrst situations when the autofocus feature is confused it sends out a a flash to see the subject and get a fix, all cameras should have this feature.
The not so good.
Some low contrast areas have speckles in them at about the grainness level of ISO 400 film. This is very slight and most people will not notice. It also may be a factor of the "PaintShop Pro" software translation to the HP 1220 printer, because this graininess does not show up on the monitor.
Even with 3x optical zoom distant objects like Mt. Rainier show up at about 90 percent of their actual size, though this is pretty good at this price. Note 3x optical zoom cameras are not all alike. I depends on 3 times what size you start with. A Kodak 3x camera gives a much shaller or distant picture.
It comes with out a camera case and a slow battery charger, 13 hrs. But Sony gives you a $20 coupon towards buying a kit with a case, batteries and a fast charger 2hrs. for $40. You really want to have spare battieries and a charger that recharge them as fast as you can use them up.

Sony's DSC-P71 combines compact dimensions with a high-performance 3-megapixel sensor and affordable AA battery power. If you're looking for a take-anywhere camera that's easy to use and produces crisp, detailed images, the P71 is worth a closer look.
Optics and Resolution The DSC-P71's 3-megapixel sensor captures ample detail for sharp prints at sizes up to 8 by 10 inches. For a serious amateur photographer, 3 megapixels is a great resolution, providing enough detail to perform some cropping and still have crisp prints.
A 3x optical zoom lens (39-117mm equivalent) helps you to capture exactly the picture you want, and an additional 2x digital zoom (6x total) further magnifies your image. Remember, however, that digital zoom tends to reduce the sharpness and detail of your image, so it's best used sparingly. In low-light situations (a particular weakness for many digital cameras), a focus-assist lamp sends out a small patterned beam to help the camera accurately determine distance.
To compose your images, either use the traditional camera viewfinder or the 1.5-inch LCD display (which is also used to review the shots you've taken). Having both types of viewfinders offers the best of both worlds: if you're used to using a film camera or want to conserve battery life, use the viewfinder; if you want to see exactly the picture you'll be capturing, use the LCD display.
More Features The P71 is designed to be a simple point-and-shoot, so it doesn't have a huge assortment of manual settings. However, more advanced photographers will appreciate the manual focus mode, adjustable ISO, and white-balance settings, and well as the exposure compensation and the ability to shoot black-and-white, sepia, solarized, and negative images.
Power The P71 uses two AA batteries--a pair of high-capacity nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) rechargeables and charger are included. The benefit to using standard AA batteries instead of a custom proprietary battery is that AA batteries are widely available, so missing a once-in-a-lifetime shot due to dead batteries won't be an issue. The downside is that a digital camera will kill a set of alkaline batteries extremely quickly, especially if you're using the camera's LCD display. To ensure you'll always be ready for action, we recommend getting a second pair of rechargeable batteries so you can always have one set in the camera and the other set in the charger.
Movie Mode In movie mode, the camera captures silent video clips. Most digital cameras' movie modes are limited to 15- or 30-second clips, but the P71 can keep shooting until you've filled the memory card. The limited resolution of your movies guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.
Storage and Transfer Images are stored on Memory Sticks, Sony's proprietary memory-card format. The included 16 MB stick holds approximately 16 images at the camera's default settings. Memory Sticks are reusable, but if you tend to take more than 16 images per outing, then you'll want a bigger card. A 128 MB stick is a great size for this camera, storing around 130 images. To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USB cable between your PC and your camera--your computer should automatically recognize the camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive. If you own a Sony desktop or laptop, your computer may also have a built-in Memory Stick reader, which makes transferring as easy as reading a floppy disk.
Size At 5 by 2.3 by 1.75 inches and 10.4 ounces fully loaded, the P71 is a very compact and portable digital camera.
Contents and Recommended Accessories The package includes the DSC-P71 camera, two rechargeable NH-AA-D1 rechargeable batteries, BC-CS1 charger, video and USB cables, wrist strap, 16 MB Memory Stick, and software on CD.
Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but we recommend these accessories to make the most of your camera: a carrying case, a spare set of NiMH rechargeable size AA batteries, and a higher-capacity Memory Stick. Compatible accessories for this camera are listed near the top of this page. --Shane Burnett
Pros:
3-megapixel resolution provides ample detail for most users
Compact dimensions make it easy to bring this camera along on outings
Point-and-shoot operation makes it easy for even beginners to get great results

Cons:
Movie mode lacks sound
Proprietary Memory Stick memory card format less common and more expensive than other formats

Kodak EasyShare C530 5MP Digital Camera Review

Kodak EasyShare C530 5MP Digital Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Detailed reviews often sound negative, so I will start with the simple good stuff.
If you are thinking "I just want a camera that works, is this one OK?" the answer is yes, it's OK. It takes generally decent pictures with good colors, has been reliable for me (no random glitches or picture loss), and is no trouble to connect to a PC. If that's all you wanted to know, go ahead and buy it. If you have only used cheap film cameras before, most of the c530's drawbacks won't surprise you. The c530 is a decent camera and will make a lot of people happy. It's an improvement over Kodak's previous low-end models with smaller size, faster operation, and larger resolution pictures.
But the price of this model creeps very closely to better cameras, some of them only $10 higher, while still maintaining some of the characteristics of cheaper cameras. So here are the things you might not like if you ever compare it to a better camera...
Fixed focus:
Like a $10 film camera you used to use, this camera does not have adjustable focus. The lens is arranged so, through most of it's range, it takes OK pictures. The pictures are not "bad" but never quite perfect either. For old film cameras, this was often an advantage for people wanting a simple, fast camera. But the disadvantage is you can't be sure to get a well-focused picture at any specific distance, and you can't get a good picture at all of anything less than 3-4 feet away (you won't be able to get a good full close-up of a face). Digital cameras with automatic focus are available for only a small price increase, and often can focus and take a picture as fast as the c530. For a few bucks more, you could have nearly perfect focus on most pictures, and the camera does all the worrying.
No "optical" zoom:
"Optical zoom" means the optics (lenses) do the zooming, like a telescope. "Digital zoom" means the camera "fakes it" by ignoring the outer portion of the image it would normally take and stretches the middle pixels. So if you use digital zoom, you aren't really getting a 5 Megapixel picture. You are taking only, say, 2 megapixels (depending on the zoom level used) from the middle and muddling them to stretch them to 5 megapixels. A camera with optical zoom instead would have the same clarity at full zoom as it would for close-ups. If your old film camera had no zoom at all, you might not care, but if you get a camera with real zoom capability you will never want to go back.
Shutter response:
For any digital camera, there is a slight delay from when you press the shutter button to when the picture is taken, and if your camera is slow you risk missing those brief moments that would be fun to photograph. This is not convenient, but is unavoidable in affordable digital cameras. This camera is about average speed for it's price range, but does not have to take time to focus. In the same time it takes this camera to take a picture, other cameras are able to adjust the focus automatically first and then take a picture just by mashing the shutter button. Better cameras also let you "pre-focus" by pressing the shutter halfway, then waiting for just the right time to click it. If your dog starts to sniffle, you aim and press the shutter halfway, then wait to click it right when the dog sneezes. No such option here, because focusing isn't the delay, the delay is just slow operation.
Small lens:
The plastic window covering it is large, but the actual lens is smaller than a pencil lead. Smaller lenses capture less light, which means slower shutter speeds are necessary to get a good exposure, which means more motion blur. It also means pictures in dark areas won't come out quite as good. Technically there is more to it than lens size, and it's not as bad as I make it sound, but better cameras definitely perform better.
Harsh picture compression:
Most digital cameras will compress the image they take to reduce the file size and fit more pictures on a memory card, although it also reduces the quality of the picture. The picture is analyzed by the camera's software and all kinds of fancy math is done so the picture can be encoded into a smaller size file that still displays as many pixels. Compression of images generally works very well. A picture can often be reduced to 20% or less of its uncompressed size and you don't even notice. But the c530's best picture quality compresses your pictures to less than half the file size that most cameras do. This might actually be balanced with the lens and focus quality and not stand out, but all of these things combined make the 5-megapixel c530 not quite as good as other cameras with the same number of pixels.
No lens cover:
Most cameras have some kind of cover that slides over the lens when the camera is off to protect it from scratches or dust. Sometimes it's a fancy automatic mechanism, other times it's just a piece you push manually. This camera has a fixed window in front of the lens, so it isn't directly exposed, but you don't want that scratched either.
No sound for videos:
If you are moving up from a cheap film camera, this part you might REALLY not care about. But nearly all digital cameras have this feature. Some, like this one, don't record sound, which can be disappointing later. It's much more fun to record videos of silly things if you can hear the crash or the subject saying "OK, watch this!"Should you buy it then?
You might still want the c530. It's smaller than some other cameras, and depending on how you will use it maybe it's fine. I keep the c530 in my car in case I need it and my other cameras are not handy, so even after all of the drawbacks I listed I still find it to be useful. But recently a lot of newer cameras are looking like a better deal. This review of the c530 is very similar to my opinion of the c300 (a larger, older, cheaper model Kodak), except the price of this camera along with newer competitors that are now available make the c530 not necessarily a great deal for the price.
Right now I think the best alternative is the Canon a430. I had this camera in mind when writing this review. As I write this, it's only $10 more. It has 4 Megapixels instead of 5 like the c530, but the a430 has optical zoom so you get the same detail when zoomed in as you do for close-ups and everything in between. Its auto focus can take clearer pictures at any distance. You can select better picture quality (less compression). All of that adds up to the a430's 4-megapixel pictures looking better than the c530's 5 megapixels. If I could trade in a c530 today and pay only $10 to get the Canon a430, I would do it gladly.

I bought this camera before my trip to Las Vegas in March 2008. The last time I went to Las Vegas I took a Sony camera and was very disappointed with all of the blurry pictures I ended up with. It was a total waste of time even taking the pictures. With this new Kodak ZD710 I had 1 blurry picture out of over 350 total. I am very pleased with the color, lighting and very sharp images. I had no trouble with the lens cap like the previous review stated. The cool thing is the camera automatically kicks off the lens cap when you turn the camera on. You will never take a picture by accident with the lens cap on again. Overall, its is a great camera. Great color, lighting and the biggest for me only on blurry picture. That picture was taken as a test while traveling 40 miles an hour down the strip. Just my two cents.

TASCAM DP-008 8-Track Digital Portastudio Review

TASCAM DP-008 8-Track Digital Portastudio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After wanting a digital multi-track for a long time, I finally decided on this model, and I'm glad I did.
One thing that is not included in a list of specs is the usability factor. I've purchased my share of electronic devices for making and recording music over the years. Just looking at a dry list of specs has often been my method of deciding on what to buy. Well, on paper the DP-008 looks good, but it's not until you use this to cut a few tracks that you realize how well it is designed. I'm SOOOO glad I didn't buy the DP-004, as this model is clearly the results of Tascam eliminating the weaker aspects of the 4 track model just in time for the 8 track version.
I have seen a lot of digital multi-tracks that look good on paper, but to use them is a real pain. The fact that the DP-008 has all the individual track knobs means that you don't have to go flipping through pages on a menu or choosing the "hot track" in some other way. Here it's all laid out logically and makes tweaking the final stereo mix a piece of cake. Sure it would be nice if there were level sliders rather than dials, but these work just fine.
I use this model to record myself playing guitar and bass, run a Boss drum machine into it, and I record vocals with an external mic though a small mixer that has some helpful effects on it. You don't need a mixer, though, as the included mics are quite good. I am able to record several tracks, "bounce" them if I want to, and then write them to a stereo master mix. Then, I export that mix on the unit itself (sounds weird, but basically you're just creating a wav file that can be seen by a computer). The final step is connecting the DP-008 to a computer and merely dragging the song files over to the computer. I then use Audacity to convert it to an ogg file or mp3.
I use Linux and the process of transferring songs to the computer is very simple. In the past you would have received a useless cd-rom with a crappy "song transfer" program and maybe some crapware to go along with it. I'm glad that Tascam has decided to treat the customer right and state it clearly: There is no need for special software. Once you export the song, it will show up as an external storage device and you can simply transfer the files over to your computer, whether it's a PC running Windows or Linux, or a Mac.

Concentrate on your music and not on the recording process with the easy-to-use Tascam DP-008 8-track digital Portastudio, which can capture CD-quality audio wherever you roam. Using a Secure Digital (SD) memory card, you can record two tracks simultaneously and work with up to eight tracks in a multi-track project.
You can use built-in microphones to grab ideas, plug condenser mics into the XLR inputs or plug a guitar directly in to lay tracks. There's even a metronome and chromatic tuner built-in for tight-sounding tracks. The DP-008 also allows you to digitally bounce tracks to make room for more, and touches like editing and undo make recording stress-free.
Each track on the DP-008 has its own row of knobs for level, pan and effects, just like Tascam's classic cassette Portastudios of the past. The effects knob sends to a built-in stereo reverb processor with hall, room, stage and other effects. Each track also has EQ to tailor the sound for your mix. When your song is complete, mix it to a dedicated stereo track while riding levels and flipping pan as much as you want. You can export your mix, or even individual tracks, as a WAV file.

Kodak EasyShare CX7330 3.1MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom Review

Kodak EasyShare CX7330 3.1MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For most people, 3 megapixels is all you need. And while I wouldn't have chosen the Kodak CX7330 for myself, my wife bought it for me to replace our old 3-megapixel Konica, and it's quite a capable little machine. Despite extensive photography experience for over 20 years, I'm surprised how much more I use it because I don't have to make so many decisions about the pictures I take.
The CX7330 takes great snapshots, just don't expect much manual control over them. Whether this is the camera for you depends on whether you want that control (in which case you should pick another model), or just want to take decent photos (in which case this one is quite good).
The camera body is not especially small and all plastic, but (other than the memory card door) feels solid and is comfortable to hold. The controls are very straightforward: choose one of five photo modes, or one movie mode, then press a button to shoot. Since the camera has a good lens and intelligent electronics, the results are generally very good, with much better auto-white balance than on many other comparable cameras. For novices or those who don't have or don't want to use a computer to process their photos, the Share button and available dock and printer could be handy, though they're not for me.
Low-light performance without a flash isn't so great. There is no way to force long exposures, the camera lacks an auto-focus assist lamp like Canon models have, and the lens is a bit slow. Startup and shot-to-shot times are decent, but not all that fast, and fairly typical of this class of camera. Battery life, using either NiMH rechargeables or the included lithium expendables, is fabulous, the best I've ever seen from a digicam using just two AA batteries -- and a huge improvement over many other battery-eating models.
The only control you have over the camera is to choose the shooting mode, set how the flash behaves (auto, forced on, forced off, or red-eye reduction), decide on a resolution (you have no control over how much compression the camera uses, just photo size), and set the self-timer or nice 3-shot burst mode if you want. You can adjust the exposure compensation to take longer or shorter exposures, but there's no way to set the shutter speed, focus, or f-stop directly.
One useful option is a 3-megapixel 3:2 ratio size, which makes shots that fit on the longer 4x6" prints from most photo stores, without needing to be cropped. The movie mode (if you're into that) is quite good for this sort of camera: 320x240 pixels with sound, 15 frames per second, with no limit on time other than the size and speed of your memory card. There is also a neat onscreen display of little "brackets" showing where the camera is focusing, though there is no way to change that other than to recompose your photo.
A few other quirks: Other than the image size, most other parameters (like flash mode) reset themselves when you turn the camera off and on. You can choose either to use the internal 16 MB memory OR an SD/MMC memory card (if present), but not both, i.e. there's no easy way to use an external card until it fills up, then switch to the internal memory automatically. You must make the switch using a menu, or remove your memory card. Finally, while the optical (lens-moving) zoom works all the time, the digital zoom (always a misomer; it's really "in-camera cropping") only operates if you have the LCD screen turned on.
So this is not a camera for serious pro or "prosumer" photography, but for carrying around all the time as a family snapshot camera, or as a backup when you just need to get the picture, it does the job well. And for the price, it's quite a deal.

The Kodak EasyShare CX7330 is ideal for the digital photographer who wants great photos from an easy-to-use camera. The CX7330 offers 3 MP resolution, a 3x optical zoom lens, 16 MB of internal memory, compatibility with SD and MMC memory cards, and a movie mode that continuously captures video up to the full capacity of your card.

Canon PowerShot SX100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black) Review

Canon PowerShot SX100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After using this camera for a longer period of time, I have a bit more to say about it than my initial review. While I originally touted the manual controls, I found that they were not as useful in real world situations as they were while simply getting to know the camera. This camera performs well in daylight, but shots requiring a flash will drive you nuts because of the long recycle time.
The Good:
* Compact size with great zoom (best feature)
* Great color (in good lighting)
* Flash is easy to control (doesn't fire when you don't want it to, a problem I've had with many other cameras)
* Nice LCD
* Comfortable grip, better than a mid-size pocket camera
* Easy to use
* Manual controls are easier than other compact cameras
The Bad:
* Flash can take up to 10 seconds to recycle, not good for people photos (for example, if you shoot a photo of a friend and find that it needs more light, you pop up the flash and have to wait 10 seconds before you can take another photo. most people find this wait time annoying.)
* Dead batteries leave the lens halfway retracted (making it risky to transport the camera until fresh batteries are installed)
* High ISO is too noisy (common with compact cameras, but I've seen other compacts that do better than this one when it comes to noise)
Overall opinion:
At this price point, the good mostly outweighs the bad here. If you are looking for a camera for travel, this gives you a long zoom, and thus a lot more freedom in what you can shoot, than a standard 3x zoom, without the bulk and weight of larger cameras and DSLRs. If your photography consists of mainly people, at all hours of the day and indoors, you might want to avoid this camera as it will feel too slow to get the shots you want. If your photography does NOT consist of mostly people, then this camera should work great.

Samsung SC-D382 MiniDV Camcorder Review

Samsung SC-D382 MiniDV Camcorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm covering this camcorder in more detail on youtube with user "rofthorax", that's my account.
I purchased this for about 179 dollars from Sams Club, and have had nothing but fun with it ever since. I've only had it for five days, but in this time I've connected via Firewire to my PC with an old Firewire IEEE 1394 card that had been collecting dust for almost a decade. Purchased a Firewire cable from Radio Shack, and have had a flawless integration between this camcorder and Ubuntu Linux (Free OS) Kino video editor(FreeVideo Capture and Editor utility, comparable to Movie Maker on XP). I was expecting to have a lot of trouble and looking around for drivers, but it worked the first time without a hitch.
Some of the things I can do with this camera and Kino:
1. capture video to DV on the computer via firewire at ~3MB/sec, good enough for video editing.
2. control the DV cam via firewire with Kino, fast forward, rewind, step reverse/forward, shuttle controls, stop, pause, etc..
3. Even when I'm playing videos I've captured to the computer, on the computer, the video playback is shown on the DV Camera's LCD screen (not quite as flawless, a bit of skip, but not bad considering I wasn't expecting this kind of integration).
4. Can use Samsung SC-D382 camera to record video to the computer's hard drive via firewire, by-passing the tape.
I can't tell you how exciting that is.. Especially to do it on Ubuntu, I've been boycotting Microsoft products after having problems with a laptop that prevented me from obtaining drivers for XP.. I switched to Ubuntu, and have be desperate for video editing capabilities for months, and have finally found a work flow for doing it.
Samsung SC-D382 -> Kino -> Blender ..
Blender's sequence editor is capable of processing DV directly, and the sequence editor plugins are written in C, easily compileable with GCC in Ubuntu. Also Blender was the program used to make the animation "Big Buck Bunny", a completely open sourced movie that utilizes blender.
Anyhow, I've been able to do quality video work using Kino to captrue video from the SC-D382 and using blender to edit and render it to a format I can upload to youtube.. I've been able to dump hour long videos onto youtube using compressed OGG files ("oggconvert"), so now with this DV camera, I can do quality 16-bit audio with full-res NTSC video, not HD, but what do you expect to get for 180 dollars? Besides HD is a resource hog, and NTSC is sufficient for downsampling to Youtube.
The video is interlaced, so I have to find a way to merge the fields into 30fps full frame non-interlaced somehow.. Downsampling interlaced video produces larger files than downsampling non-interlaced video.
An hour of video from this camcorder produces about 10GB file, so if you are on XP, make sure you have a NTFS drive to store to, FAT32 can't use files larger than 4GB. Linux has plenty of file systems, JFS and XFS are ones that are commonly used for video work. I'm using EXT3 currently, because I'm working in "/var/tmp". I haven't experienced any dropped frames..
As for the Camcorder, the only problem I have is the joystick on the LCD preview screen is a bit tough to operate, but you should be able to figure-out the camera without a manual.. The Manual looks like it was made for an Idiot.. So if you are one, best use the manual. I was up and working with this one in 5 minutes.. The Firewire was plug-and-play.
Only stumbling block is I had to run Kino as root to get it to talk to the Camera, but that was like 3 minutes on google searching for help and a small leap of faith.

The camera permits you to change white balance and perform some effects in record mode.. You have stop recording to switch Digital Image Stabilization mode off and on. Zoom exceeds my 10x zoom Olympus SP-510UZ, and permits me to zoom and auto-focus and do all the things a video camera should, while recording. My Olympus doesn't permit me to zoom while recording Audio (don't ask me why, Olympus is probably trying to protect their camcorder line from their digital camera line, Olympus even reduced the audio quality to 8Khz with 8-bit sound, which really sucks).
I was thinking about getting the 18x Optical Zoom version of my digital camera, and was torn between getting that for 260 dollars, anbd getting a DV Camera.. And I'm sooooo glad I went with this..
Note, Tapes are best for archival! DVD's are easily destroyed, tapes have greater surface area and greater longevity than DVD's (which have been said to have a 5 to 20 year lifespan, depending on the manufacturer). Best to get Tape based camcorder than DVD or Hard Disk.. Hard Disks can crash and DVD's are easily ruined. The draw back to tapes is ease of access, its linear, and to transfer to the computer requires a re-recording.. But you could easily waste that much time performing a video render from a non-linear video editor like Adobe Premiere on Windows or Kino/Blender on Ubuntu. What's one more hour? You think you are that busy? Besides on Windows you could waste more time in other ways.. I've not missed windows one bit, switching to Ubuntu.. When stuff is supported on linux, it works flawlessly and without compromise, but
finding the software is the big toughy.
The Camcorder, has two modes, record and play. It's easily turned on and
off, menu button on top left, always accessible, video effects modes like "art (polarization), mirror, mosaic, sepia, negative", pre-set color balance and the typical white balance mode. 12-bit and 16-bit audio modes, mono and stereo audio (not sure if the mic is a stereo mic). Tapes carry about an hour. Twice the storage of a dual layer mini-dvd, and about the same size.. Rewriteable tapes, zero quality loss between uses, it seems.. White LED fore-lite, for lighting a night recording.. Your battery will last about 30 minutes if you use the LED Light.. If you don't, the battery will for an hour. Button to toggle extra on-screen details, record button accessible on LCD screen and on back of camcorder, accessible by thumb.. Button on top permits you to take pictures. Zoom is controllable by LCD flip-out pivotable screen and standard toggle on the top of the camera. Comes with AC Adapter, L-ion battery is charged when not in use.. Can be used without battery.. Can be used as a camera for recording to computer, via firewire, without a tape (or battery).
Plug behind battery looks like an HDMI plug, but not sure..

I chose this camera because it has the feature to stamp the date on the picture (in all sizes starting from 1.1 to 6.1MP), also the price was great. I've been using the camera for a while and the quality of the picture is very good, almost as good as a Canon SD 630 that I have. I like cameras that come with AA batteries, in this particular case, the 2 AA batteries would last 100s of pictures if you don't use the flash much. The camera is very easy to operate, and it's very handy. The videos that you can make are very good in quality of sound and image. I usually take pictures at 3.1MP, and it's good enough pixels to develop at 5x7 pictures. If you want to buy a camera for 120 dollars approx, this camera will not disappoint you. Good Luck!!!

We really like the camera! The shutter speed/time to take picture with flash still isn't awesome but it takes great pics in low light without the flash so it compensates that way. Have gotten some really good pics of the kids doing stuff. Still has a little bit of a problem with blurry when the kids are moving or I'm shaking or something but it's still the best camera we've ever had!!

Canon PowerShot A580 8MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom Review

Canon PowerShot A580 8MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These PowerShot "A" cameras are Canon's attempt to deliver the quality and features of its more expensive PowerShot "G" and PowerShot Pro "S" lines (such as full zoom lenses) at a budget price. The results are pretty good. (How do I know? Because I've actually gotten to use all of these cameras. I earn my living at Walt Disney World writing a travel guide, and nearly every day guests ask me to take photos of them with their own cameras, which most often are Canon PowerShots.)
Here's my opinion of the top-selling "A" series cameras:
7TH PLACE: Featuring Canon's acclaimed Digic III processor, the 2007-model A560 includes the company's face-detection metering system and a decent red-eye removal. It's a nice camera, but a better value is the new A470 (see below). $150 list.
6TH PLACE: The A570IS is the same camera as the A560 but with optical image stabilization and the ability to shoot manually. $200 list.
5TH PLACE: You can do a lot with the sweet little A630. It's a 2006 model, but has a flip-out LCD panel and lots of manual controls. The shots I've seen from this model look great. Keep your ISO under 800 and you won't get any noise. $350 list. (Canon offers a 2007 version of this camera that I haven't had much experience with yet, the A650 IS. It also lists for $350.)
4TH PLACE: The 2008-model A580 (the camera on this page) is a 2008 upgrade to the A560. The face detection system works a little better than the one on its predecessor, and the new model is slightly rounder and easier to grip. A fine performer and a great bargain. $150 list.
3RD PLACE: The fully-loaded A710 IS has all the toys, including a full-range zoom (35mm film equivalent of 35-210mm), adjustable flash power and optional second-curtain flash. This last feature means you can make the flash fire at the end of a long exposure, instead of the beginning, so moving subjects streak into focus instead of out. A 2007 model. $500 list.
2ND PLACE: The 2008 entry-level A470 is great for kids or anyone just looking for a good basic camera. But frankly, it's better than basic. It includes Canon's face detection technology and has a zoom lens, 14 shooting modes and the ability to set exposure compensation, ISO and white balance manually. Plus it looks great. Everyone with this little camera always seems to be having fun. $130 list.
1ST PLACE: The A590IS is the A580 (see 4th Place, above) with image stabilization and with the option of full manual controls. For an extra $30 those features are well worth it. I bought this model for myself. $180 list.

Logic3 i-Station Dock and Speaker Station for iPod Review

Logic3 i-Station Dock and Speaker Station for iPod
Average Reviews:

Ok- so everyone has an iPod now... that's cool. But do they have awesome sound that you can share their tunes with everyone? iStation has great sound, and is easy to travel with. I take it on business trips (it slips nicely into my carry-on bag)and listen to tunes in the hotel room. It takes up so little space, I take it back/forth from office to home, where I can synch and charge all at once. On the weekends, iStation works great on the boat. My kids loved it so much, my daughter had to have one for her dorm room, and my teenager at home uses it in her bedroom.
I never run out of battery time now... every time I put the iPod in the cradle, it gets a charge.
My neighbor has speakers from a competitive brand- he gets no charge and the sound output is not a great as my iStation. I'm thrilled with this buy! And best of all, it costs less than the competition!

Pentax K-x Digital SLR with 2.7-inch LCD and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL Lens (Black) Review

Pentax K-x Digital SLR with 2.7-inch LCD and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL Lens (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this camera last Friday. I had 2 full days to take great shots with this camera. I purchased two bundle kit, which comes with 18-55mm lens as well as 50-200mm lens. I have another manual focus lens, which is A50.7.
One of the most asked questions about this camera is AF speed. Yes, AF is pretty quick. To test AF speed, I sometimes turn focus ring to opposite direction and checked the time it takes to set the focus. It was usually less than 0.4s. Even in low light situation, it worked fine. I took many shots with only one small table light in the living room so, ISO was 6400 and shutter speed was 1/4. Camera doesn't seem to have any problem for AF. Nice thing as a entry level camera is that it supports up to 11 AF point and you can choose your AF point. Some may say, it lacks super impose. However, simply touching 'ok' button reveals current AF point in the LCD screen. So, that's not a problem. AF is sharp and accurate. In MF mode, camera indicates the right focus in two ways both sound and indicator. So, there's no problem using manual focus lens. in Liveview mode, Camera magnifies focus point to assist you, which is very useful since viewfinder is very small.
High ISO support. This is the best part I like about this camera. It supports up to 6400, and can be expanded to 12800. I took several shots outside around 6:00 PM. My friends used flash but my K-x didn't require flash. with 3200 or 6400 ISO, it still gave me clean bright pictures. Pentax did a great job reducing noise, especially color noise. It's hard to find the noise from the pictures. Now, 3200 is something you can use everyday. Actually, scene mode for the kids uses very high ISO to get 1/1000s or faster shutter speed. Thanks to that, pictures for my kids are all sharp and crispy.
User interface is very intuitive and simple. Since this camera is small, most of the buttons are within reach of your thumb and index fingers. Though it's small, grip is ergonomically designed so that camera is very stable in your hand. It has one auxiliary button (green button), which you can assign other functions. It has drive mode, ISO, White balance, aperture and flash buttons. It also has dial to navigate menu faster.
It uses 4 AA batteries and this is really nice. You can use your Ni-MH batteries or Lithium-ION batteries. It your camera is run out of juice, you can go nearby stores and buy one quickly. I took about 250 shots and I didn't need to recharge yet. Camera recognizes battery type automatically and optimizes the operation.
with all the bells and whistles, I think Pentax K-x is super buy for the beginners. Not only it has all the features needed, it outperforms higher grade DSLRs in certain area like low noise. Thanks to great compatibility for the mount, even 30 years old lens can be used for this fresh new DSLR. It was quite fun to look at postings to sell old, student film camera kit at bargain price and you can use lens out of it. I also got 50mm fast lens which is excellent to take portrait shot from used market.
A few updates.
1. Some folks reported battery compatibility issue. Below is the blog of Pentax USA President. He recommended user to put batteries and wait for a few seconds so that Camera recognizes the type of batteries.
[...]
2. It also reveals a few problems related to Shake reduction. First, it produces noise from magnet handling CMOS censor. Bad thing is, this noise is recorded in movie mode. K-7 also has same issue but it supports external microphone. K-x doesn't allow that so, this can be one issue.
3. It also shows color overflow problem under low light situation, especially red and blue. When there's bright light, for example traffic signal, red color or blue color spread around as if it overflows.
A few users reported above problems to Pentax R&D and they are supposed to return by 11/9. I hope firmware upgrade will fix those problems.

levels of details, image quality, noise, features - I love everything about this little gem. Video is good too and my only complaint is that it needed a lithium-ion rechargeable battery to support more battery life when using movie\live mode. Its enough when using 4 AA lithium batteries - it lasts for at least a 1000s shots plus some occasional live mode and movie usage. Ive read about Sanyo eneloop rechargeables (these should last longer) but havent tried them yet. But with regular rechargeables it doesnt last that long enough.
I love the low noise and amount of details I can get shooting up to 1600 ISO - night shots (no flash), aquarium or theater images now look beautiful and I dont have to use a flash. All shot with 1600 ISO gives me enough shutter speed to get great sharp and detailed images.
UPDATE: 12/15/2009
Pentax released a firmware update for k-x dSLR that fixes battery problem.
[...]
I have installed the firmware and it looks like it does fixes the problem. Now it doesnt give me half-battery orange indicator when I use my lithiums (its still green).
I havent tried it with rechargeables because I dont have any yet (still using my lithiums).
UPDATE: 04/01/2010
I bought Sanyo Eneloop Rechargeable Batteries - those working out pretty well in holding the charge.
Since December I think I only recharged them two or three times and the indicator got into red just yesterday.

Casio Exilim EX-FH20 9.1 MP Digital Camera with 20x Optical Zoom and 3-Inch LCD (Black) Review

Casio Exilim EX-FH20 9.1 MP Digital Camera with 20x Optical Zoom and 3-Inch LCD (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this camera from Best Buy on Thursday, and have shot over 30GB worth of photos and videos with it in just 4 days.
The highlights: This camera has every shooting mode under the sun. It will shoot 9 megapixel stills, up to 7 megapixel stills at the incredibly fast rate of 40fps, HD 720p video, and slow motion video ranging from 30-1000fps. It also has a 20x zoom (although I find the zoom to be only slightly longer than my Canon S3 IS "12x zoom", but the wide angle is much wider).
The camera is very easy to setup and use, although I am still trying to figure out some of the more advanced features (like the ability for the camera to automatically take photos when an object enters the frame).
Image quality is pretty good, about the same as my Canon S3 IS. It does much deeper blues and reds than the Canon, and doesn't have as bad chromatic aberration, but it's greens are a little too blue for my taste, and the off-whites need some more yellow. Noise isn't as high as I expected, but do realize this is not a DSLR, it's a small lens and a small sensor.
Lighting seems to be key with this camera. In direct sunlight, it takes amazing photos and videos, but in low-light, the high speed videos begin to suffer. I haven't had any that I took under normal lighting conditions come out unusable, but a few that I took in a very dim office nearly are.
My only complaints are minor, but here they are:
When shooting video, even with continuous AF off, it will still occasionally try to refocus, I find this very annoying
I cannot seem to find the settings to turn on move-in CS (motion-sensor triggers the camera)
While the latest firmware drastically improved write speeds for video, shooting single stills seems to take a long time to write to my class 6 memory card
I really don't like the proprietary USB connection, it is very difficult to find the right angle to get it to plug in because it's so narrow
Pleasant surprises:
Unlike the S3 IS, it remembers your photo and video settings very well, and if you set photos to manual focus and then want to take a video, the video will "pick up" that setting as well
The big 3" screen on the back is beautiful, with the Canon I mostly used the viewfinder, not so with the Casio
Startup time is faster than I expected based on other reviews, from power on to first shot isn't noticeably longer than the S3 IS
The flash is very bright and VERY fast, up to 5fps
Editing videos on the camera is ridiculously easy, hands down the best video editing GUI I've seen on a camera, makes it very easy to just keep the part of the video you want
Build quality is very good, I especially like the rubberized grip, it's much more secure than the Canon, and easier to hold despite it's heavier weightI'll post a further review after I've spent some more time with it, and hopefully a few of my little quibbles will be fixed in upcoming firmware.

Plays great and have used it probably daily and didnt need to change the batteries for a month on the second level my only complaints are the aweful headphones(buy new ones)that are very flimsy and where the shock switch is(right under the cd inside the flap)where you need to open it and remove the cd to change it. On my previous one i had broken off the lid within a week NOT going to happen on this one i've dropped numerous times and it keeps coming back un-harmed. The hand strap is great for running ang biking but is a pain while around the house use. Awesome machine!

The snazzy DSJ301 CD Walkman boasts Sony's exciting S2 Sports design, ergonomic joystick operation, and great sound. Ultimate Skip-Free G-Protection technology and a three-way control key on the grip together permit use while jogging or participating in other activities, while a supplied hand strap makes it easier to carry. Though it's not designed for immersion, the Walkman does offer a water-resistant design with rubber gaskets, bushings, and water-resistant seals that help keep out water, moisture, and dirt.
Sony's Ultimate Skip-Free G-Protection technology boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks--up to 10 times faster than conventional systems. The player delivers 50 hours of playback on two AA batteries (not included) bolstered by Sony's two-position automatic volume limiter system (AVLS), which conserves batteries and guards your hearing by capping your listening level. This player supports optional Sony Nickel Cadmium NC-WMAA rechargeable batteries or optional Nickel Metal Hydride NH-WM2AA rechargeable batteries, offering great savings and convenience over replaceable batteries. Other features include nine playback modes (among them shuffle play, repeat play, and 64-track program play) and audio CD-R/CD-RW playback.
