(More customer reviews)Recently my lab was asked again to compare "LONG STORAGE" nimh against "normal" nimh and "HIGH CAPACITY" nimh cells showing dropoff in storage and use.
Did you know there are 3 versions of JUST the eneloop AA cell (forget the AAAs for now - they're great cells but also being revamped!)
A]Eneloop "lite" - 1000 mah rated to deliver 900 mah - for low draw devices - remote controls, wireless mice, etc
These are a low pricepoint entry level eneloop cell - all the features, half the charge though, but for wireless stuff its well suited and cheap.
B]ENELOOP (original) - 2000 mah rated to deliver 1900 mah - long discharge curve and all the strongpoints of "LONG STORAGE" cells - chances are you own these if you bought eneloop
C]prototyped in 2009 "eneloop PLUS" (this one - but you can't be sure) - the product number now ends in A - alpha (eg 3uA on the side of the cell)
While the original (B) promised 1000 cycles till dead, the "plus" is promising 1500 till dead which is what we are looking at, as well as the discharge curve as it hits 1000 cycles
So this cell differs by:
+1500 cycles to dead cell status instead of 1000 on the original 1995 product
+a bit better storage retention than the original ENELOOP 1995 product entry
+a bit higher cell voltage
(this is not rumor but rather an official 2010 release from sanyo)
All good things, but at a premium priecepoint, hence the entry - mid - premium. No hard numbers are being said (e.g. its still 2000 to deliver 1900 mah at 1.0 v cutoff)
So right now in AA size we have sets of 20 cells of the lite, normal, and plus in lab fixtures that drain, rest, charge c/3. rest, increment counter, and repeat. We are also looking at duracell's entry and prototype cells from a well named manufacturer who submitted no name samples to test. Come back in a couple months and we can tell you the truth, but as for now, I'd bet on this plus version. We should have all the info after our testing is done in a couple months - i'll try to fasttrack these first and update.
**WARNING**
according to our packing info it (the plus) doesn't come in an 8 cell package - we had to buy from a battery store in 5 x 4 cell packages. The plus can be viewed on the isle of the store with a special logo in the upper left hand corner of the hanger that looks like a 1500 with a circle around it, or by the A suffix on the battery itself. We did NOT order this 8 cell "PLUS" version because it failed to meet our given specifications for indication of a PLUS battery in their photo, and no logo to see. That logo is how you can ensure your money is going to plus cells in the store and not [B] version cells marked plus for extra $$$ by the store. If we had a photo of the PACKAGE we would have bought these plus cells - watch for the logo!
