(More customer reviews)This package, "Rayovac 2 position USB charger with 2AA NiMH LSD batteries" (PS19-2B), is a poor value because:
- The Rayovac PS19 USB charger is extremely primitive. It simply charges at a fixed current (200mA for AA, 90mA for AAA) FOREVER! The two green LED indicators do not go off when batteries are fully charged. It is up to the user to remove those batteries after a certain number of hours, depending on the estimated capacity of the cells.
- The two rechargeable NiMH batteries included are the 'LD715-OP' (just remember that 'OP'=Opening-Product). Those are the cheapest pre-charged AA cells offered by Rayovac, but the rated capacity is also lowest at just 1400mAh.
I have tested those LD715-OP cells using my old La Crosse BC-900 charger/analyzer. Upon arrival, they hold an average remaining charge of 1320mAh. After two more charge/discharge cycles, their average capacity improved to 1540mAh, which is 10% higher than the rated capacity. Still, it is much lower than that of the old Rayovac Hybrid (LD715) and new Rayovac Platinum (PL715), both of them rated and tested at 2100mAh.
If you are looking for a better USB charger package, I recommend the Sanyo eneloop USB Charger. It offers the following advantages:
- The Sanyo MDU01S is a smart charger, meaning that it stops charging when each cell is full. Its charge time is much shorter, because the charging current is higher (850mA for one cell, 450mA each for two cells). Furthermore, it comes with a short USB cable to plug into your computer's USB port. This is much better than having a bulky USB charger sticking out from your computer.
- The Sanyo eneloop AA cells have a higher rated capacity of 2000mAh (actual measured capacity is close to 2100mAh). Its self-discharge rate is also lower than that for any Rayovac Pre-Charged cells.
As of this writing, both Rayovac PS19-2B and Sanyo MDU01S are available at similar cost. So it is easy to see which package is the better value.
