If you can get past the battery usage factor, you will love this camera! I bought it after reading good reviews elsewhere (it had just been released and there were no amazon.com reviews at that time). I wanted something reasonable (but better than a kiddie camera) for my soon-to-be 6 year old niece. She took the camera everywhere during a trip to Washington, DC and was able to operate it with ease (although she never quite got the concept of the zoom...but that didn't matter to her).
What is good about this camera is you can set the program to eliminate "shake" or motion from the picture. If you accidentally moved the camera while taking a photo, it corrects the picture before saving it. This is simply amazing. Using this function resulted in superb pictures every time. When I decided that this function was consuming too much of the battery life, I turned it off, but after a couple of photos it was clear that it improves the photo even when you think you have a pretty steady hand...so I turned it back on.
The box included a set of AA batteries but no rechargeable batteries or battery charger. Those are optional items, as is a cover. I bought a 4 GB media card for $11 and that is the way to go with this camera. You'll run out of battery life long before you run out of photo capacity! After doing some research, I opted for the alkaline batteries recommended by the owner's manual. I believe that results in superior photos over the rechargeable batteries and was extremely happy with the performance. For the $93 that I paid, this easily performs on par with my other $300 small digital, although it does consume the batteries like there is no tomorrow! So make sure you take plenty with you (buy them on sale!) and you'll have a great time with this camera.
I really wanted to give this product 5 stars for value & performance, but opted for 4 stars solely because of the battery usage factor.

Kaito Electronics Inc. KA500BLK Voyager Solar/Dynamo Emergency Radio - Black Review

Kaito Electronics Inc. KA500BLK Voyager Solar/Dynamo Emergency Radio - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tested the KA500 along with several other self-powered radios for a project I'm working on in rural Sub-Saharan Africa. I found that the KA500 is a very capable shortwave receiver it's just not nearly as rugged as its competitors. Here are my thoughts:
What I like about the KA500:
- Solar Panel--the KA500 is one of the only portable shortwave receivers out there with a built-in solar panel. The panel is effective enough that it will power the radio (if in direct sunlight) without batteries and produce a reasonable amount of volume through its built-in speaker.
- The 5 LED reading lamp -- This reading lamp is impressive. If the batteries are fully charged, the lamp works for VERY long periods of time. I'm also an amateur radio operator and found that the reading lamp is bright enough that it lit up my large radio table.
- Good shortwave sensitivity -- For a self-powered analog radio, I was impressed with the shortwave sensitivity. I also found the AM broadcast and FM bands adequate/average.
- Good selectivity -- When a station is tuned-in well, you don't often hear adjacent signals.
- Good frequency coverage -- I like the fact that KA500 covers the NOAA weather frequencies, FM, AM and a very large portion of the SW spectrum (from 3.2 MHZ to 22MHz, missing only a little used piece between 8 & 9 MHz)
What I didn't like:
- Quality -- Though the radio feels solid in your hand, I found through my testing that the quality of the KA500 is actually quite poor. More than once, the tuning mechanism would slip and the needle would get stuck in the middle of the dial. The worst part, though, is the poor quality of the hand-crank mechanism. The dynamo and crank arm feel cheap. Well, they are cheap. After only a month of occasional testing--and with me being very careful with the hand crank--the dynamo started showing signs of failing. The crank became less fluid to turn and would rub the side of the radio chassis. One day, while slowly cranking, the crank arm just snapped in half. No more crank power.
- No Fine Tune control -- Kaito fits the whole SW1 and SW2 spectrum on a small dial. There were a few times I wish this radio had a fine tune control like the Grundig FR200.
BOTTOM LINE:
I sent my KA500 back and did not get it replaced. It's a shame, really. I loved the radio's features and overall performance, but was very disappointed with quality.
I could only recommend this radio to someone who plans on tucking it away and using it on rare occasions or someone who wants a basic full-featured radio but never plans on using the hand-crank. I'd also keep the receipt handy for the return (and buy from an authorized dealer like Amazon or Universal Radio).
For my purposes, I will be using the Grundig/Etón FR350 and the FR200. The difference in quality between these and the KA500 is night and day. The Grundigs/Etóns are very rugged, water resistant and time tested. The crank arms are made better and even after long-term use, continue to function properly. They're simply designed and tested better (before hitting the retail shelf).
Sure wish Kaito would work on the quality of the KA500, they'd have a very competitive product. For now, I'll stick with Etón!

Fujifilm FinePix 2600 2MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom Review

Fujifilm FinePix 2600 2MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

Before purchasing the Fuji 2600, I experienced a number of other digital cameras, some costing much more. Although many of them had more features, none were as reliable. I finally gave up on the expesive cameras since the extra features (that require the use of the LCD display) are worthless in sunlight anyway. This is a gadget free camera that takes excellent pictures. I've never missed a shot even when the subjects are in motion. The fast auto-focus and lack of gadgets makes this camera seemingly foolproof.
Sharp, bright and true color (No sign of color aberations, blooming or color saturation) - Quiet fast zoom lense - Downloading pictures is simple and fast - Batteries last longer than any other digital I tried - Camera comes as a complete package (includes rechargeable batteries, compact charger and a reasonable size memory card) - Camera is small & easy to carry (the future of digital cameras) - The F3.8 lens is a bit slow for low light conditions but adequate for most shots and perfect for a camera of this calibre - The optical view finder shows only 80% size of final photo (Most cameras seem to do this and I don't understand why, however, you do learn to compensate).
I've had my camera for about 2 weeks. Already 2 of my friends have purchased the same camera after seeing it. It's a reliable camera at a great price. I highly recommend it.

The FinePix 2600 reaffirms Fuji's reputation for producing high-quality, affordable digital point-and-shoot cameras. Like its predecessors, the 2600 is compact, lightweight, fast, and fun to use.
The 2600 is competing in one of the most crowded segments in the digital camera market. Virtually every manufacturer is now (as of November 2001) producing a 2-megapixel point-and-shoot with a 3x optical zoom lens, and it's no surprise: these cameras closely resemble their film counterparts in size, shape, and function, and the 1,600 by 1,200 images they capture contain enough detail for 8-by-10-inch prints, more or less matching the quality of most film point-and-shoot cameras.
With so many models to choose from, why pick the 2600? For one thing, Fuji was unusually generous with the accessories. The camera comes with a 16 MB memory card (big enough for 39 pictures at default resolution), plus a set of rechargeable batteries and a charger. In addition, this camera is quicker than most of its competitors. When you turn it on, it's ready to use very quickly, and shutter lag and shot-to-shot performance are also surprising for a camera in its class. Battery life is also good, especially for a camera that uses only two AA batteries.
Of course, not everything about the 2600 is perfect. Its body is made of plastic, and some of the buttons don't feel quite as durable as those on other cameras, though we had no problems with reliability during testing. The sliding clamshell lens cover is a nice touch, but, unlike other cameras, sliding the cover open and closed does not turn the camera on and off--there's a power switch on top for this purpose. As a result, we sometimes found ourselves closing the lens cover and forgetting to turn the camera off. In addition, the camera offers relatively few manual controls: white balance is adjustable, as is exposure compensation, and the flash has five modes, but shutter speed and aperture are both set automatically. The camera also includes a 20-second movie mode, but the movies lack audio. If you're the type of photographer who simply likes to turn the camera on, aim, zoom, and shoot, you'll be thrilled with the simplicity of the design, but if you want more control, this probably isn't the best choice for you.
The FinePix 2600 Zoom is a great value, especially for photographers who love point-and-shoot simplicity. It's affordably priced, simple, and fun to use, includes rechargeable batteries and a charger, and produces crisp images. --Shane Burnett
Pros:
Compact, lightweight, fast, and affordable
Sliding cover protects lens
Package includes batteries, charger, 16 MB card
Movie mode captures silent 20-second clips
Speedy USB image transfers

Cons:
Few settings can be adjusted by user
Two-step on-off procedure seems unnecessarily complicated
No video-out connection for TV image viewing

Sony DSCP72 Cyber-shot 3.2MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom Review

Sony DSCP72 Cyber-shot 3.2MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Usually the best reviews come from those indivduals that just bought something and haven't found the bad news, or are unwilling to accept that they made a bad decision. I had read the reviews on almost every 3-5MP digital cam on Amazon.com, and had several in the final running for my actual purchase. This camera won the contest because of its high quality user interface, low light performance, and most of all its video mode capabilities. Its the only camera I've seen that does a reasonably high quality video mode, with no time limits other than what your storage capability is. Also the resolution of the video mode, and the fact that its in a very compatible format sealed the deal for me. This camera is very intelligent when using the "auto" settings, and could definitely help anyone take better pictures. For those like me, most of the features are manually controlable as well, in addition to saving manual settings to your own program. One thing that didn't get mentioned in previous information about this camera is that it saves the settings information as part of each picture, so that you can go back later and compare which settings are working best for you and your picture taking styles. I already recorded several movies and was astounded at the audio/video quality that I was presented with, I was able to connect it directly to the T.V. and the frame-rates and resolution were just fine for home-movie quality recording. If you get tired of only having a camera, or only having a camcorder, and never both. You have to take a look at this thing. Also, this camera comes with 4 effects like Sepia, Black and White, Solarize, and Negative. I was very pleased to find out that these effects can be used in BOTH the camera mode and video mode. I was also amazed to see that in video mode that the zoom is available for use, and that the camera utilizes an auto-focus, much like your average camcorder. For what I do, I did not need 5 megapixel. I mostly print images smaller than 8x10, and much of my work ends up on my websites. So I wanted to trade extra megapixels for features. This was absolutely the right choice for me. Also, the camera came with 2 nickel metal hydride AA batteries as well as a charger, USB cable, and television intervace RCA cables. That is a lot of toys for the over-all price. This camera has also gotten great marks for battery performance, and I wasn't able to kill them after playing all afternoon and evening on about half of a full charge. I ended up having to put it on never-ending slide show mode to drain the batteries all the way down. It took over 4 hours even then.

The fun, easy-to-use Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P72 digital camera packs in more pixels and more features than its predecessor. With its 3.2-megapixel resolution, the Cyber-shot DSC-P72 produces stunning images in a diverse range of conditions. The Cyber-shot DSC-P72 bumps up the optical zoom to 3x from the DSC-P52's 2x rating, helping you bring distant subjects closer. It's also one of the first Sony cameras to be compatible with Memory Stick Pro.
Step-up Value Here's a Sony feature that adds value to this digital camera and differentiates it from other models in the Sony lineup.

Optics and Resolution The 3.2-megapixel resolution creates images large enough to print 11-by-17-inch enlargements. The 14-bit DXP system plus Super HAD CCD combine to produce excellent image detail and stunningly smooth contrast and color rendition. The Cyber-shot DSC-P72 offers a 3x optical zoom and 3.2x digital zoom for a 9.6x total.
Storage and Transfer Images are stored on Memory Sticks, and a 16 MB Memory Stick is included. The Cyber-shot DSC-P72 is also one of the first Sony cameras to be compatible with optional Memory Stick Pro media, which can extends data capacity up to 1 GB.
Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB connectivity, which means it can be connected to any USB-based Windows 98/Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.
Movie Mode You can capture far more than still images with the MPEG Movie VX function. Most digital cameras' movie modes are limited to 30- or 60-second clips, but the Cyber-shot DSC-P72 can keep shooting until you've filled the memory card. When used with Memory Stick Pro media you can shoot approximately 22 minutes of video.
More Features

1.5-inch LCD monitor and true-zoom optical viewfinder for more accurate framing at eye level
The three-area multipoint autofocus can intelligently focus on the subject and avoids mistakenly focusing on the background
A multi-burst mode captures 16 images (320 x 240) as part of a single 1,280 x 960 image and plays them back sequentially in the camera
The Multipattern Measuring feature establishes a maximum exposure value, independently light metering 49 points of the frame, even where pronounced highlight and shadow are not centered
Five scene modes: twilight, twilight portrait, landscape, snow, and beach.
Built-in flash with red-eye reduction, auto, forced on, forced off, and slow-syncro modes

Power, Size, and Contents The camera is powered by the NH-AA-DA rechargeable NiMH battery (included). It measures 4.7 by 2.3 by 1.3 inches and weighs 7.9 ounces. This package includes the Cyber-shot DSC-P72 digital camera, 16 MB Memory Stick, battery and battery charger (BC-CS2), USB and AV cables, wrist strap, and CD-ROM with imaging software and USB drivers for Windows and Mac.

I received this kit today and it looks like everything is well made. Haven't had a chance to test out the functionality and durability yet, but I feel like overall it's a good value for your money. I don't know why I was expecting a bigger tripod because I know in the description it says "tabletop", but it is 4.5" tall - just an FYI.

Canon PowerShot A460 5.0MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom (Silver) Review

Canon PowerShot A460 5.0MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this camera (Canon A460) as a second camera and was looking for a pocket-sized, compact, digital camera that had zoom and video capabilities, took AA batteries and priced reasonably cheap [...] The Canon Powershot A460 is all that.
It's small enough to fit into your palm and fits into the front pants pocket easily and is light enough that the camera is not really noticeable after a few minutes. It seems to me that Canon designed it to be carried without a camera case because there is a lens shield that pulls into place to cover the lens whenever it is powered off. (The lens retracts into the camera body when it is powered off, and the lens cover pulls into place automatically). The body is well rounded with no sharp edges anywhere that might catch parts of clothing. The LCD screen is exposed but I pasted one of those see-thru LCD screen plastic protectors (sticky on one side) on it to protect it from scratches. All the camera's openings are well protected by covers. The only cover that I thought had a little more play than it should was the battery cover.
The camera powers up extremely quickly. You can focus with either the viewfinder or the LCD screen. One thing that surprised me was that when using the viewfinder, there is no information shown on the viewfinder other than a green light to indicate that the camera is in focus or a blinking orange light to indicate it is not. The LCD mode shows a lot more info (eg, ISO speed, current resolution, etc). But, I guess it makes sense since this is a camera that is meant to be simple, and what could be simpler than knowing when something is in focus or not. That's pretty much all the info that's needed. (Switching to the viewfinder will conserve battery power).
I bought a 2GB Kingston Secure Digital card for about $13 on Amazon for this camera so there's plenty of space. The card can be removed and put into a SD card reader that comes with most modern computers and laptops. (My laptop, the Toshiba Tecra A5 has it, and it was bought about 2 years ago). The computer will recognize the SD memory card as an extra drive, and the transfer rate is extremely fast. If your computer does not have a SD card reader, then the USB connector can be used to transfer the images to your computer instead.
In video mode, the zoom works only when in the highest video resolution (640 x 480). (This was a surprise to me too. On my Canon Powershot S1, the zoom works in all video resolutions). The video is a little more choppy compared to the Canon S1.
There is no dedicated zoom lever. Two of the buttons normally used in menu navigation also serve as zoom controls.(The Canon S1 (my other camera) has a dedicated zoom lever, which is nice). I guess, one of the reasons for reusing buttons for zooming is a more compact design--no lever sticking out that might catch your clothing). Once I got used to it, I did not have any problems using the 2 buttons for zooming.
The pictures taken are the usual Canon quality. You do have to pay attention to make sure that your hands are not shaking when you press the shutter since there is no image stabilizer (I've gotten spoilt by the Canon Powershot S1 which has a image stabilizer). [...]The buttons on the camera are designed and placed so that you could operate the camera with only the right hand if so desired. The left hand is used just to stabilize and steady the camera.
This camera uses a focus beam light that helps it to focus quickly and and has the much lauded Digic II processor. Both are technological improvements over the Canon Powershot S1 which does not have an autofocus light and only has a Digic I processor.
The camera uses AA batteries (either the rechargable or the normal type will work). Easily available power was an important feature for me.
I was very pleased with the Super Macro capability of this camera, which allows for extreme close ups. To access this mode, you have to set the camera to "M" (manual mode) on the dial, and then press the Func/Set button. This will open up a menu where you can set the camera to "Super Macro".
[...] This camera (Canon A460) has a "SCN" mode in which you can choose different scenes (Portrait, Night, Kids, Pets, Indoors, Foliage, Snow, Beach). I've used the "Snow" scene setting and my pictures came out great when I'm skiing and taking pictures. (To access the Scene setting, turn the dial to "SCN" and then press the Func/Set button, which will bring up a menu that allows you to choose the settings).
I'm really enjoying the Canon A460 and it has filled its role in my camera arsenal admirably. I needed a camera that I could take with me when I'm skiing or snowboarding that was light and small and cheap. It fits into my pants pocket and is pretty light that it does not interfere with my balance, etc. (The Canon S1, though a great camera, was a little too large to fit into my pants pocket or in a fanny pack. However, it is still my preferred camera when I'm able to have a camera case or back pack with me.)
Update (4/11/2007)--I've had this camera for about 2 months now and have accidentally dropped it twice from about 2 to 3 feet onto a hard surface floor. Also, have dropped it into a foot of snow while skiing and using the video. The camera is still working flawlessly.

After seeing good reviews for many of the AT&T phones here ,I bought the E5900B locally. The unit seemed to have good quality build and a great features list. Unfortunately, I am returning it before using many of the features. The sound quality on the answering machine is so poor, nothing else could get me to keep this unit. I couldn't recognize my wife's voice on trial messages. It is overly compressed, like some Battlestar Gallactica robotic voice. It is worse than a 10 yr. old no name unit I had previously. I would rather have had 12 minutes of clear time than 25 minutes of this.
The handsets are good, with clear reception on calls. Range seemed acceptable, but not exceptional.

I was really struggling to justify over $400 for a Canon Speedlite when I came across the Vivitar DF283 shoe mounted flash at Amazon. Having owned a Vivitar flash before, I was aware of the quality of their products. As soon as I received it I put it to the test. It functioned perfectly. It has 4 zoom positions from 28-85mm. It swivels and tilts for bounce flash. It comes with a diffuser, a bounce card, cleaning kit and 4 batteries. I am quite pleased with this flash and it's capabilities. It is well worth the investment and I still have enough for a new lense.

Midland GXT800VP4 26-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) Review

Midland GXT800VP4 26-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair)
Average Reviews:

I have owned several of the top rated Cobras and Motorolas. I already owned a pair of Midland's older "5 watt" radios, but I purchased the 800's to get the longer antenna and any improvements they might have made to the transmitter and receiver sections. The 800's have no great surprises. Range is very good for a GMRS consumer radio but we all need to start disregarding the outrageous published claims by the manufacturers on range and output. They are largely irrelevant. If you want more accurate information on output and range, browse through the very helpful two-way radio forum at: http://www.twowayradioforum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=4
According to the FCC, actual radiated power from these units (at the antenna) is a bit over 1.6 watts, but that's very good when compared with most other brands of GMRS radios on the market. In terms of usable range in a suburban environment, think in terms of 5 miles at the outside; less where there are hills, buildings or trees. Less yet from car to car.
The radios are a bit bulky but manageable. Sound quality is reasonably good, and volume is only OK. All in all, a good investment for the money and a 3 year warranty is one of the best. Based on my experience, I can recommend these radios for most consumer applications.

We use radios on our 20-acre property, where we're thinning trees and doing other outdoor work. Radios are a lot better than hand signals when we're working together, and easier than running around looking for each other when we're apart. Since some of the work is dangerous, radios are a good safety measure.
We bought these radios recently to replace a pair of the predecessor model that we wore out. (Too much rough handling broke one of the antennas, I think, and reception went downhill.)
We have been happy with both pair. This model has more channels, otherwise the same features. Power and reception are very good in hills and forest over the 1/3-mile maximum range we use them in. One battery charge lasts all day.
The top volume does not seem to be quite as loud on the new pair. I wish they came in some color other than camo -- drop one on the forest floor and you'll need the other radio to locate it.
We used over-the-ear boom headsets with the first pair, and we got the "security" headsets for this pair. We wear them under hearing-protection earmuffs around noisy equipment. Nonetheless, the noise of a diesel tractor or chainsaw will drown out the transmission, whether you're speaking or listening.
The headsets and batteries are interchangeable with the previous model; the charging bases are not.

Sony Ericsson W580i Unlocked Quadband Phone (Black) Review

Sony Ericsson W580i Unlocked Quadband Phone (Black)

(More customer reviews)
This is one awesome little phone. First of all the screen is the brightest and most detailed I have found on any phone. In the store it is so bright it just screams at you. I have found that reducing the brightness to 70% is more than adequate. If you have trouble reading a phone in direct sunlight, fear no more. As for features, there are just too many to mention. I first learned about it from the Toyota website as I just bought a Prius. It is one of the VERY few phones that will integrate seamlessly with the car. It can even upload its phone book via Bluetooth to the car. Most phones (except smart phones/PDA's) will not. They are also 3 times the price. It has a great sounding MP3 player. It is stereo Bluetooth, FM radio...I could go on and on. There are some great themes free online so you can customize away. If there was one gripe it would be that it doesn't come with an M2 memory card which it needs if you are going to load up on music and photos. I can't complain though as this phone is very affordable. Some complaints I have heard are that the number keys are too small. Well, I'm 6'2" and about 280lbs. (not a small guy) and I don't have any problem getting my fingers to work the buttons. The other complaint I have heard about is battery life. Well I have talked and talked and played with this thing for 3 days now, and the battery is still more than half. I'm not sure what people think is good, but after my RAZR...pffft...this thing is great. My techie coworkers were amazed by the display and all agreed that it was unbelievably bright. I would recommend this jewel to anyone who wants a great phone that has a lot of cool features. It blows away the Samsung SCH-a737 and the LG Shine. Go to a local AT&T store and play with one. Then buy one at whatever outlet suits you.

Canon PowerShot SX20IS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch Articulating LCD Review

Canon PowerShot SX20IS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch Articulating LCD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start off by saying that I'm not a professional photographer. My decision to purchase the SX20 IS was based on a desire to get an excellent still shot camera, with high capacity zoom, that also had HD Video (720p) capabilities. So, I began my research and spent many hours scouring the web to make an informed decision. I had narrowed my choice to the Canon SX20 IS and the Panasonic DMC-FZ35.
Here are some of the key specs of each camera:
Optical Zoom (Canon: 20, Pana: 18)
Still image files (Canon: Not Raw, Pana: Raw)
Articulating LCD (Canon: Yes, Pana: No)
720p HD video per 2 GB (Canon: 10 min 33 sec, Pana: 15 min)
Video file format (Canon: .mov, Pana: AVCHD Lite)
Battery Type: (Canon: 4 AA, Pana: Li-ion rechargeable)
Stereo Audio (Both)
SD Card Storage (Both)
[...].
In the end I decided to go with Canon for a few key reasons:
#1. The articulating LCD (pull out, tilt/move) was a key factor, as I wanted to be able to shoot from many different angles. It came in handy very soon--the second time I used the camera--I was able to whip out the LCD and get some decent shots at a football game when I had to raise the camera high over my head to shoot over the folks standing in front of me.
#2. The ability to easily share video files. The .mov file format is a more widely accepted format, which can easily be shared (without processing/conversion). The files are accepted on sites such as You Tube. The files can be played with Quicktime and other media players (e.g. VLC). Although the Panasonic camera uses a format which is more compressed and allows more data to be stored on an SD card, the file format is not as wide spread and not as easy to share with others, without converting the file.
#3. Consumer Reports rankings for last year's model: Canon #1, Pana #5 (SX10 IS & Pana DMC-FZ28). I suspect the SX20 IS will follow the same trend this year when Consumer Reports releases their test results for 2009.
#4. Canon takes AA batteries. This makes the camera slightly heavier, but you'll always be able to get economical batteries in a pinch, without the need for buying a proprietary lithium ion battery. May I recommend Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries. I bought some new on Amazon. They are excellent. I haven't charged them yet and I've taken 120 pictures and 40 minutes plus of 720p video. I've also played back the pictures and movies on my TV/Projector and transferred all files to my computer, using the same batteries, without charging them. And they are "..still going..."
Here are some sample pictures taken with the SX20 IS. Keep in mind that Flickr doesn't display the full, original picture which was taken in maximum resolution (in auto mode). [...].
I've taken some great up-close family shots and macro shots. They look great and are very detailed. I took some night/action pics (with the flash) and adjusted the shutter speed and ISO settings and the pictures looked great, given the conditions.
[...].
I apologize for the camera jitter in advance as I didn't have a tri-pod and I was in a tight area in the Stadium when I took the shots.
I must admit that I am thoroughly impressed with the video quality/resolution. I shot sample video from my 1 year old camcorder (Panasonic SDR-H40, a standard definition hard drive camcorder) and shot the same footage with the SX20 IS. The difference in quality was amazing. Not only was the Canon much sharper, but the richness and vibrance of the colors was so much better. I sold my SDR-H40 on Ebay within two days. I now will have only one camera to shoot stills and 720p HD video--the Canon SX20 IS. The videos from the SX20 IS looked awesome--on both my 32 inch 720p LCD and my 100+ inch screen via a 720p DLP projector. I connected the camera with an HDMI cable and bam, I was ready to watch great video and view still shots "on the big screen." See the above referenced links for video footage yourself. If I were given the opportunity to watch a football game shot in standard definition by ESPN or an HD version of the same game, shot with the SX20 IS (on a tripod, without my hand jitter), I'd pick the latter in a heart beat.
No buyer's remorse here! If you are looking for an SLR type camera, that does awesome stills and great 720p HD video (both zoomable at 20x optical), you'd be hard pressed to get more bang for your buck then the SX20 IS on Amazon.
One minor issue I've noticed is that when zooming in/out while shooting video, you can here a slight "click" when you initiate the zoom and when you stop the zoom. There is NO noise heard while the lens is zooming/telescoping in/out; the "click" is only heard when the zoom is initiated and when the zoom is stopped. The "click" is not that noticeable. I had to shoot footage in silence, after the kids had gone to bed, in order to distinguish the "click." In most shooting environments I don't expect it to be much of an issue.
Best of luck with your purchase decision.
P.S. By the way, the owner manual states that you must use the Canon software to transfer images/movies from the camera to a PC, else movies will not transfer (frames will be dropped) correctly and images shot vertically may be transferred in the horizontal orientation. So, don't just do a copy/paste of the files them self from the SD card. Keep this in mind as you view sample video on the web.

Olympus Camedia C-5050 5MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom Review

Olympus Camedia C-5050 5MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been an avid photographer for over 35 years. I recently sold over $7,000 worth of Leica equipment because it was gathering dust. Even so, I have not given up on film-based photography just yet and have a complete collection of professional-grade Nikon SLR equipment. This is the context in which I make the following comments about the Olympus C-5050, a 5 megapixel digital camera.
I have been watching the evolution of digital cameras for a number of years, wondering if they would ever approximate film-based photography for the advanced hobbyist. I can report without reservation that based on my brief experience with the Olympus C-5050 that day has come.
Are we there yet? - When I reviewed the current crop of "pro-sumer" non-SLR digital cameras, I expected to pick up an interim camera that would hold my "digital curiosity" for a couple years and revisit the issue when 20 megapixel cameras were the norm and film-based photography was dead to all but a few narrowly focused professionals. What I came away with is that 5 megapixel is more than adequate for 99% of your print requirements and strikes a good balance in the areas of file size and write speed. Will 6, 8 and 10 megapixel cameras that come out in the next couple years do a better job? Not necessarily if the bulk of your prints are in the 5x7 to 8x10 range (although even 11x14 fairs rather well) and you crop your subjects with care.
The images - After reading a couple of reviews, not the least of which was at dPreview.com, I was concerned about a couple issues; noise levels (the equivalent of grain in film-based photography) and chromatic aberrations in high contrast images. There was also criticism that the sharpness of the images was a little harsh. Resultantly, I set the camera for sharpness, contrast and saturation as recommended by this well respected reviewer. The first thing I noticed was the images were not contrasty enough. Then I started to look at other attributes including the noise and CA issue. I came to the opinion that Olympus may have taken these criticisms to heart and recalibrated their software to correct the noise problem and zeroed out the sharpness, contrast and saturation adjustments. In terms of the CA issue, I simply haven't shot into situations where this is a problem. Then again, maybe I'm not as critical as some reviewers.
Point is, the camera takes wonderfully sharp, contrasty, and "noiseless" photographs that 99% of the people using this camera would be hard pressed to differentiate from a 35mm pro-sumer SLR.
The camera - I was an owner of Leica rangefinder equipment for over 10 years so I appreciate a well made camera. I loved the solid feel of the Leicas, the ergonomics, and precision of these photographic instruments in miniature. I wasn't expecting this, but I have the same appreciation for this Olympus. The magnesium body has weight, it feels solid (with the exception noted below), it fits your hands perfectly, the controls are where you would expect them, and there is just the right number of external controls; not too many to be confusing and not too few to require frequent visits to "drop-down menu hell" which is a place even Nikons occasionally send you to.
The caveat to the comments about the "feel" of the camera is the lens that extends and retracts when you turn the camera on and off. It looks cheesy and subjects the extendable plastic lens housing to damage. The solution is to permanently install an Olympus CLA-1 conversion lens adapter, a 43-46mm step-up ring and a UVa filter. This well machined metal extension provides a self-contained extension in which the lens extends and retracts and looks every bit a part of the original design of the camera. The lens is protected and it improves the looks of an already good looking camera.
The competition - I didn't start looking for the Olympus. I was initially looking at the Leica Digilux 1, the Nikon CoolPix 5000 and 5700. I also looked at the well-regarded Canon G3. When I asked the salesperson whether there were other cameras I should consider, he pointed me to the Olympus C-5050, "Try this, a lot of people come away with a very favorable impression of the Olympus and end up buying it." Mind you this is at a high-end camera store in the Bay Area.
The Leica was a little bigger and boxier than it needed to be; not a bad camera but didn't necessarily follow in the footsteps of the M6 or M7. I was disappointed by the Nikons. In addition to the reliability problems reported about the CoolPix 5000 elsewhere, the ergonomics weren't quite right and you needed to delve into confusing menu options too change basic settings. The 5700's LCD was simply too small and it was annoying how you either got the LCD screen on the back of the camera or the LCD through the viewfinder, never both. The Canon was nice but felt a little too much like a point-and-shoot.
Other picks, the Leica and Nikons use a proprietary battery which means you will have to add an additional hundred dollars or so to the purchase of the camera if you don't want to run out of power. The Olympus wisely uses standard AA's that you can get anywhere in a pinch and even the best rechargeables cost only $20 for a pack of 4. Additionally, the Olympus is very good on battery power, you can shoot an entire day and the batteries still have a good charge. The Leica uses only SD memory and the Nikons use only CF whereas the Olympus can use 4 different types of memory.
Bottom line, the Olympus exceeded my expectations in every respect. And here's the best complement one can pay any camera - with the Olympus C-5050, I don't miss my Leica's.

Logitech mm32 Portable Speaker System for Pod and other MP3 Players(Black) Review

Logitech mm32 Portable Speaker System for Pod and other MP3 Players(Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Puts out a decent level of sound from an inexpensive set of speakers. It looks best suited for someone that travels with an iPod and wants to listen to tunes at the hotel without sticking the earpods in the ear, and it satisfies that need--quite good sound for such a small unit but of course it's not gonna match the bigger Bose or Apple or Klipsch or similar units that you might sit on your desk. A note of caution--while the description refers to routing the charging cable, this unit does not charge your iPod. All it does about charging is to let you put your separate charging cord from your separate charger through a hole in this unit--don't be mislead by the mention of "holds your iPod cables for charging" that it has anything to do with actually charging your iPod. The travel bag is 13" long by 4" around, which is the size of the unit (it doesn't fold in half or anything like that), so it's fairly portable. Volume is definitely acceptable, as I see some reviews for similar products comment about issues with the volume on those units. Just make sure your iPod volume is turned into the top half so the speaker unit isn't trying to do magic with very low input.

iHome iH26 Portable Travel Alarm Clock for iPod (Black) Review

iHome iH26 Portable Travel Alarm Clock for iPod (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a fun little device - the perfect size with plenty of features. It fits on my nightstand in place of your typical alarm clock, not taking up any extra room. It easily packs up to go on the road with you. It has custom adapters included for every size of docking iPod, as well as a connector for non-docking iPods. Great sound, great control of sleep vs. wake volumes, and a nice dimming feature with 4 settings to it, so that the light of the clock doesn't keep you awake. And if you forget to dock your iPod, the buzzer alarm will still sound (actually it's a beeping alarm).
If you are a heavy sleeper, or like 90 minutes of sleep music in addition to your wake music, I recommend putting your iPod on shuffle all songs before docking it on this station so that you won't get to the end of your playlist and run out of music.
I only have two complaints about the iHome 2 Go travel alarm clock. One is that my clock seems to gain a few minutes every day, so it ends up being very fast. I reset the time once a week. The other is that I have to remove my iSkin to dock my iPod. I was sure when I bought the skin that it said I wouldn't have to remove it to dock the iPod, but because of how the docking works on this station, I do.
