(More customer reviews)After reading "NLee the Engineer's" review for an inexpensive Rayovac charger that came with 4 Hybrid batteries, I became convinced that I needed a "smart" charger. My experience with the Rayovac was consistent with NLee's review -- it charged at a 350 mA rate and turned itself off after 8 hours, even if a fully charged pair of batteries was placed in it to start with. The batteries did get hot in the Rayovac. I found this Duracell CEF21NC to be processor controlled and capable of charging one battery at a time, if desired. It charges up to 4 batteries simultaneously, but monitors each individually. When fully charged, each battery is switched to a low trickle charge rate -- separate LED strings signal each battery's status. The charger avoids getting the batteries as hot as the Rayovac did. The USB slot is a nice bonus -- it evidently smart charges rechargeable equipment plugged in there too. I was disappointed that the 4 rechargeable AA cells that came with the charger were not the new low self-discharge rate type, but were only standard Duracell NiMH batteries. The power cord is a standard two-prong unit similar to the power cords that plug into my Dell and HP notebook computers -- it can share their power cords and leave its own home. I am pleased with this Duracell charger, but have only had it one day.
