(More customer reviews)The Accessory Genie EN-El3 dual battery charger for Nikon DSLR batteries seems a like a dream accessory. When traveling and engaged in full day photography with lots of battery draining activities, it is not unusual to need to charge 3 or 4 batteries during the night. This is typical for wildlife photography where often there are high frame rates, cold temperatures and a need to monitor exposures on the LCD. So having a kit with a car charger attachment and the ability to simultaneously charge two batteries when you sleep would be a Godsend.
Reviews on the net would reveal some problems with the dual chargers from Accessory Genie. While anecdotal, there are a sufficient number of product failures to have caught my attention. Nevertheless, the cost savings compared to a Nikon solution were too attractive to overlook. Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by build quality issues. The wall adapter does not snugly fit into the back of the charger. The male end only partially enters the female receptacle leaving exposed a significant part of the metal contact. It is slightly loose as a result. Not reassuring. Nevertheless, I attached the battery plates, inserted the batteries and away it went with a successful charge.While charging, the 4 indicator lights for each battery let you know the level of charge: 25, 50, 75 or 100%. Eventually after being charged the lights turn off. I consider this last feature both a benefit or a design flaw depending on interpretation. If you want to avoid light in your room while sleeping, I guess it's a benefit. If you want to know if your battery is charged and that it is not an issue with a charger failure, you need to put the battery in your camera and check. If you remove a charged battery and then reinsert it into the charger, the lights may or may not come on to indicate 100% charge. So again, a little disconcerting.
I am soon to use the product for extended field use in the arctic and will report back if there are longer term durability or car charger issues.
